If you are a frequent reader here, you already know this we love the YMCA camps in Colorado! We often visit a few times a year, just to get out of town for the weekend. That’s one of the benefits of finding a YMCA camp, they are perfect for an affordable staycation for the family. Winter, summer, spring or fall, every season is the perfect season for a visit!
As a family that is homeschooling in Colorado, I will say that going to visit the YMCA camp is one of our favorite “field trips” of the school year! The kids get to do so many activities that we normally don’t get to do, it’s sort of like a weekend/week long gym class for us. The experience goes way beyond the classroom walls, which any homeschooling family can tell you, is what counts the most.
We have visited during every season, this particular visit was during the winter and we were able to go dog sledding! That is something we’ve never done before, but it’s something I’ve dreamed of. It was an absolute blast! We paired off so that the weight wouldn’t be too much for the dogs and rode in groups of mostly 2 (though I rode alone since there were 5 of us), the ride was relaxing and beautiful. We rode through some very serene parts of the YMCA and the silence, combined with the snow, the dogs, and the breeze on my face was incredible. I just felt so at peace.
The dog-sledding tour was amazing for homeschooling families because there was a whole big classroom gathering beforehand. The dog handlers told us all about sled dogs, their lives, how they train, how they work, and they told us some funny stories too! The kids really loved learning about the sled-dogs and they asked if we could do a unit about them when we got home too… BONUS! They were inspired!
