When I first read the description of this movie, I immediately discounted it as one of those parody movies where you see Anna Farris running around making terrible puns and the audience groaning with scattered laughs- not the case at all. I saw the trailer for the movie and instantly knew it was something I have to see.
I have also attempted to describe this movie to A LOT of different people, with the result being the same each time… A look that says, “you must be crazy, that is one of the worst ideas ever”. I encourage them to watch the trailer and move on.
Here is where I will attempt to tell the story- Enter “R”, played by Nicholas Hoult (X-Men First Class), a zombie who still has not given up on his humanity, he can think and function, but has one flaw- a taste for living flesh.
On one of their “grocery” shopping trips, R meets Julie, played by Teresa Palmer (Take Me Home Tonight, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice) where he kills her boyfriend Perry (Dave Franco) and takes his brain as a snack, where he experiences his memories. This is a means to try and remember what it is like to be human. Through Perry’s memories, he develops an affection for Julie and it begins to change him in a way not thought possible.
Overall, I was not disappointed by this movie in any way. The story was fantastic, the comedy was laugh out loud, yet not the “parody pun” type comedy. I was entranced through the whole thing and felt myself drawn into their plight.
Who this is for? I would say the PG-13 rating is right on. There are some scary scenes that may not be appropriate for those under the age of 13, but no nude scenes and minimal bad language.
Who this is not for? I think everyone would enjoy this movie unless you only like Indy movies…
My recommendation? See it… nuff said!
Enjoy!
