When I heard the title Jersey Boys, I had no idea what the musical was about. A story about four guys? Famous people from Jersey? and singing??? The answer was D.- all of the above. Jersey Boys is the story of the Four Seasons, told in a way that showcases the four “seasons” of their career- Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter. Frankie Valli, Bob Gaudio, Tommy DeVito and Nick Massi make up the original band.![]()
The story is told in a background to wonderful vocals to all of the hits from the group. Sitting there listening to the songs took me back to my childhood, memories of listening to the oldies station with my father were in abundance, as the actors sounded almost identical, if not identical to the radio versions I remember from so long ago. Singing Sherry, Big Girls Don’t Cry, Walk Like a Man, the story of their lives, both in happiness and tragedy, are told on the stage.
This was an amazing musical to see, especially for my generation (30-ish) who know all of the songs but do not know the story behind them. The story begins with Tommy recruiting Frankie and they begin playing in lounges around the area, but realize there is something missing. Then Joe Pesci (yes, that one…) brings Bob Gaudio to the group and a short while later they are #1 on Billboard. From this point the band has highs and lows during their life, ending with their inauguration to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
If you love music from this era and love musicals, this is one for you!
