This past weekend when we went camping we decided to try some new dinners and desserts using our Dutch oven because we never use it but we know how great it can be! I will start out by saying that you should get some liners for it at your local sporting goods store, without them cleaning the oven out can be awful! They are fairly cheap and make clean up easy. We ended up having to get the parchment ones because we couldn’t find the foil ones but they worked out just fine.
{Ingredients}
- 2 cans of apple pie filling
- 1 tube of refrigerated cinnamon rolls (we used the Cinnabon kind because they are awesome)
- 1 jar of caramel ice cream topping
{Directions}
Put your liner in the Dutch oven or spray it with non-stick spray
Pour the apple pie filling into the liner or Dutch oven
Pour the caramel over top of the apples
Place the cinnamon rolls on top of the apple and caramel mixture, leaving space for them to rise (throw away the frosting packet)
Put 8 hot coals under the Dutch oven and 12 on top and allow it to cook without removing the lid. After about 30-40 minutes take off the lid and check if the cinnamon rolls are done, if not continue cooking until the rolls are no longer doughy and feel done. You cannot go by the directions on the cinnamon roll container.
You can also do this in your oven at home by pre-heating to 400 degrees and cooking it until the rolls are cooked through.
This is a variation of this recipe.
